Metabolic Freedom With Ben Azadi

Jan 28, 2022

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Temple Stewart. She is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Personal Trainer, and Health Behavior Change Specialist.

Temple played D1 soccer at the University of Tennessee Martin, which is where she received a degree in Dietetics. She completed an internship at the VA Medical Center in Bay Pines, FL. Temple currently works and lives in St. Petersburg, FL with her husband and their two poodles, Axel and Rowdie.

Throughout college Temple developed a very unhealthy relationship with food and began using food rules or diets as punishment or for comfort. This behavior propelled Temple into learning all she could about food and how impacts our bodies, ultimately making her choose to become a Registered Dietitian.

Throughout the process, Temple began to learn how to eat for health and how to develop a healthy relationship with food. Along the road, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), furthermore increasing her interest in treating the body with nutrition.

In this episode, Temple talks about her journey to health and reversing the symptoms of both PCOS and Hashimotos. As a trained dietitian, Temple reveals why her education around food wasn’t exactly the best information. Plus, Temple dives into her favorite health hacks, including the carnivore diet, intermittent fasting, carb cycling, and lab work. Tune in as we chat about how much protein you should be eating, how keto will help with fertility, and tips for asking your doctor about prescribing a CGM.

[02:15] Temple Speaks About Her Journey To Health

  • In college, Temple was losing hair, and she was gaining weight rapidly. Plus, she had no menstrual cycles.
  • When she went to the doctor, they put her on birth control.
  • After moving to Florida to become a dietitian, Temple’s health worsened.
  • Temple was doing exactly what they taught her in dietitian school: eat less, move more, more vegetables, and less fat.
  • Eventually, Temple was diagnosed with both PCOS and Hashimotos.

[06:10] How Temple Realized Her Dietitian Training Was Garbage

[08:30] It Took Three Months For Temple To Reverse Her Hashimoto’s Symptoms

  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is essentially an autoimmune disease.
  • A lot of times, Hashimoto’s and PCOS go hand-in-hand.
  • Keto can be so helpful because it takes away a lot of the triggers of the immune system.
  • Through nutrition, Temple was able to get rid of all her symptoms.

[16:00] If You’re Starting To Change Your Diet, Try Carnivore

  • Everyone can benefit from a carnivore lifestyle.
  • A lot of people are suffering from something and don't realize it until they go carnivore.
  • If you want to get into ketosis quickly, try carnivore for a couple of days.
  • People who are hitting plateaus can definitely benefit from a carnivore diet.

[16:55] Insulin Resistance Is Actually Weight Loss Resistance

  • What's causing the weight to stay on your body could be due to insulin.
  • There are people who have tried every diet in the book.
  • For the most part, people end up lowering calories.
  • However, nothing will work when insulin resistance is up.
  • Weight loss is typically a symptom; it usually comes after you heal your body.

[18:45] Strategies For Overcoming A Keto Weight Loss Stall

  • A lot of times, carb cycling can be effective.
  • Complex carbs can help women depending on where they are in their cycle.
  • Temple will also suggest switching up your intermittent fasting routine.
  • The same thing goes for exercise – sometimes you are doing too much!
  • Plus, don’t forget to look at your sleep and your stress.
  • Lastly, you may need to get labs and see what’s going on with your hormones.

[21:30] Why Temple Loves To Implement Intermittent Fasting

  • Intermittent fasting is great for weight loss, aging, and protecting the brain.
  • Many people do well fasting for 16-hours and having an 8-hour eating window.
  • A 72 hour fast done quarterly can reset your immune system.
  • Temple will encourage her clients to do what works for them.
  • Fasting during breakfast is very popular. However, many women do better when they fast during dinner time.
  • With intermittent fasting, the sky is the limit.

[25:15] How Much Protein Temple Will Recommend For Her Clients

  • Temple recommends .8 or .9 grams per kilogram of body weight for a woman.
  • People who are snacking could stop if they meet their protein needs.
  • Most women are undereating protein.
  • The recommendations out there on protein are so low!

[30:10] Why Protein Is So Satiating and Filling To The Human Body

  • Protein is the building block for everything.
  • It's really the only macronutrient that you cannot live without.
  • Plus, protein is extremely satiating.
  • It's really hard to eat an exorbitant amount of food when you’re eating protein.

[32:35] Why The Scale Is Setting You Up For Failure

  • Women can fluctuate eight pounds just in terms of hormonal water weight gain when they cycle through their period.
  • People get so attached to the scale because society values thinness.
  • Instead, you should judge based on how you feel.
  • Think about how your bowel movements are, what your skin feels like, how your hair is growing.
  • The scale should be way down the list of importance when it comes to health.

[37:00] Tips On Speaking With Your Doctor About Your Health

  • First, Temple says you need to find the right doctor.
  • Usually, a doctor can get you a CGM.
  • Naturopaths and more holistic homeopathic physicians should be able to help you.
  • Tell them you are interested in how food impacts your blood glucose levels.
  • If a doctor shuts you down or isn't even willing to have the conversation with the insurance company, you might think about finding someone who is.

[40:30] Should I Follow A Keto Diet If I’m Trying To Get Pregnant?

  • PCOS is the most common cause of infertility. The most common cause of PCOS is absolutely insulin resistance.
  • So, keto will improve your chances of getting pregnant.
  • PCOS women are at a much higher risk for gestational diabetes. Going low carb will be safe if you’re doing it in a nourishing way.
  • You have to focus heavily on fatty meats.
  • When you get pregnant, you really have to focus and make sure you're getting the right nutrients.
